Jamie Roberts and Allan Donald lead a star-studded Maynard Invitation XI as part of the sixth Tom Maynard Day at St Fagans Cricket Club on Friday 29th June.

Rugby union legend Roberts, capped 94 times by Wales and three times by the British Lions, joins South African quick bowler Donald, who earned 72 Test caps and made 194 One-Day appearances for his country over a long and distinguished career.

Playing alongside them will be Australian international, and current Glamorgan overseas star, Shaun Marsh, along with Leicestershire batsman Mark Cosgrove, himself a former St Fagans cricketer who played in the same side as Tom Maynard when he was Glamorgan’s overseas player.  The rest of the side will be confirmed in the next couple of weeks.

Also present on the day will be former Australian seam bowling legend Jason Gillespie.

The St Fagans match, which is a Twenty20 game between the St Fagans club and Matt’s team, takes place after a special marquee lunch, with entertainment provided by Roger De Courcey.

This is the Trust’s primary annual fundraiser, the five previous matches having raised over £50,000 to support the careers and aspirations of young sportspeople.

Matt said:
“It should be another cracker. We have some big names lined up to play in the game. I’m delighted that Jamie, Shaun and Allan have agreed to play. It’ll be great fun, though as we were beaten in a close one last year we need to put that right this time! I am also thrilled that we’re going to be joined on the day – subject to Sussex’s progress in the One-Day Cup – by my old pal, and Trust Patron, Jason Gillespie. Roger De Courcey is a really entertaining speaker and I’m thrilled he has agreed to come along and entertain everyone.

When I last looked we weren’t far off 300 places for the marquee lunch that precedes the game, which will create a wonderful atmosphere. Huge thanks to Jane John for working so hard on promoting the lunch for us, and of course to David Harris and everyone else at St Fagans for their support.  And also to Rich Green and Abbey Glass, who are again sponsoring my team on the day.

It was especially nice for the Big Bike Ride we did with the PCA last October to have used St Fagans as its final stop before all of the riders rode the final stretch together down to Sophia Gardens. The club has a very special place in the hearts of the Maynard family and this annual event in Tom’s memory means an enormous amount to us.”
