St Fagans Cricket Club, on the outskirts of Cardiff, will be the setting for a special celebration cricket match on Friday 13th September as Matthew Maynard brings a star-studded team to play the local side, with the profits going to the Tom Maynard Trust.
St Fagans was where Tom played most of his club cricket in Wales, following in the footsteps of his father, who himself was also a St Fagans stalwart. The clubs has kindly agreed to stage this special match, which will be a very poignant one for the Maynard family because of their close connections with the club. The invitation XI is being sponsored by Abbey Glass and CPS, with kit provided courtesy of MKK Sports.
Already confirmed for Matthew’s team are former England Test and One-Day stars Andy Caddick, Paul Nixon, Phillip De Freitas, Neil Fairbrother and Shaun Udal, as well as former Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey. They are joined by unbeaten boxing world champion and legend Joe Calzaghe, former Wales rugby union international Rhys Williams and, of course, Matthew himself. A number of current Glamorgan players will also be in attendance on the day.
The match itself starts at 2.30pm and will be preceded by a special marquee lunch, with entertainment being provided by one of Matthew’s close friends, the former Lancashire, Durham and England opening batsman and renowned public speaker, Graeme Fowler. Robert Croft, a long time playing colleague of Matthew’s, has agreed to act as MC for the lunch.
