England cricket legend Marcus Trescothick was among the star names who turned out for the third Tom Maynard Day at St Fagans Cricket Club in Cardiff, raising funds for the Tom Maynard Trust.
Trescothick turned out for Matthew Maynard’s Invitation XI, which also included his 2005 Ashes-winning team-mate Simon Jones, Wales rugby star Ceri Sweeney, boxer Nicky Piper, Somerset all-rounder Jim Allenby and former Glamorgan and England bowler Steve Watkin.
The guest speaker was Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan, who also helped raise money for the Trust via a special auction, and the Invitation XI was sponsored by Abbey Glass and CPS Labels.
Matthew’s team played against a St Fagans side which included his elder brother Charlie.
Under cloudless skies another full game ended up in an Invitation XI win, Trescothick entertaining the bumper crowd with a series of lusty blows.
On behalf of the Trust, Matthew Maynard said:
“We’re so grateful to everyone at St Fagans for the hard work they put in before and on the day. It means so much to the Trust and to my family and we hope again to have raised another five figure sum for the Tom Maynard Trust, which is fantastic.
We’re especially grateful to the players of both sides, who gave up their time, the officials, all of the volunteers, those who took tables at the lunch and who donated and bid for prizes. Particular thanks from Mike Fatkin and me to Rich Green at Abbey Glass and Simon Green at CPS Labels for their sponsorship; to Richard Adler for MCing; Bob The Cat for his wonderful entertainment; and to Rob and Jane John and David Harris at St Fagans.
This is the third year we’ve staged this event and it’s a day we’re establishing in the summer calendar, which is great, and I’m sure the St Fagans club do well out of it as well! We look forward to the next one.”
